Boxx 1 Remake. Play and completion

I am not much of a completionist when it comes to video games, but when the game can be finished in one sitting, I suppose I did not have an excuse.

The game is Boxx 1 available from https://lemming880.itch.io/boxxremake as a free download.

Overview

It is a platform game where you have to collect every coin in the level (including those that pop out when you jump on an enemy's head) and avoid traps. Throughout each level there are flag checkpoints that will turn green if you got every coin en route to them. Otherwise you have to turn back to find them. The levels are not tremendously large, the couple of times I had to backtrack it was a question of 30 seconds at the most.

By the end of the game you encounter a huge robot that you have to fight. The fight has a few nice surprises to it which I will not spoil here but I had a good time completing it.

Presentation

Visually the game is quite cute and very clear and crisp. The sound is rather limited and did not really stand out to me, but it did not detract from the game either. Gameplay is straight forward and controls felt very solid to me. By default the game supports a two button controller with one button to fire the (rather rare) gun power up and the second to jump. You can also jump by pushing the joystick up the normal way.

Jumps felt accurate and I had no problem getting on and off ladders or dodging the various traps.

Technical factors

The game is offered as both adf, lha archive ready for your hard drive or A500Mini options. There is also an option for an unknown operating system called "Windows" but I can't fathom what that would be good for.

I played the hard drive version and it ran without any crashes or issues on my A1200.

Gameplay

I'd say the difficulty in the normal mode is pretty accessible. I am not great at reflex games and while I died a few times playing it, it never felt excessively punishing. Anyone could pick this up and have a great time I think.

The learning curve is very slight. You can figure out everything by playing the game and you are unlikely to get stumped by not knowing how to do something.

Replay is probably a bit limited but for a project such as this, I don't think that is really a worry. Besides the developer has 3 more games in the series so there is a lot to get stuck into, if you enjoyed this first outing.

Notes

From the developer website it seems this is a remake of the original version, in order to use a faster game engine. I have not played the original game.
